You'll notice this all the time in toxicity case reports. Doctors and researchers make huge jumps to conclusions ALL THE TIME when there are other confounding factors. As biohackers and guinea pigs, we understand the complexities of mixtures of novel compounds and extracts. Some of these doctors and researchers haven't personally taken shit in their lives. They fuck with mice/rats and look at data. They are not like Alexander Shulgin, actually trialing and feeling the effects of the compounds themselves. I think this is a huge limitation to a lot of research. How can you fully understand a compound/extract if you have never personally taken it? How can you recognize novel effects or side effects without personal experimentation? They look down on us as not being scientific, while they hand wave away clear confounding factors in their own research... all just to have something to publish in a journal. Their hubris causes them to put out just as invalid of science as any broscience or faulty anecdotal information you will find on the internet, but they hide behind the scientific method like they can do no wrong. Some of the shit I read in certain studies has me question whether or not they even understand the point behind science at all.
