Bad/good is subjective. I think some of our products taste good, or at the very least not bad, and other people on my team gag on the same thing. We do organoleptic testing on every batch, though. We had a team of people all sit in a room together and smell retained samples of every raw material over a couple month period. We used people's opinions to give general guidelines for what a raw material usually smells like. Then we have reference tubes in the lab that are used to compare every new raw material batch that comes in. If any batch differs from the standard, it gets kicked up to me to make sure things are fine. So we are absolutely testing and accounting for things like smell when intaking raw materials. Lion's man 8:1 has a unique smell. Some liken it to cocoa, but others get more of the dank/burnt tones.
