Do you have any recommendations on how to search effectively? I mostly just use examine and reddit. I'm aware of google scholar but most scientific papers are pretty intimidating. Are there any kind of tricks you have developed for skimming through papers and finding the relevant info? When researching something what kind of steps do you take that lead you to the surprising data?

It depends on your experience level and comfort with scientific data. Wikipedia is a good place to start for the average person. Examine is also good. Don't take anything you read there as gospel, but it is a good place to start getting an idea of things to research more. Then use Google Scholar to find the direct studies. Then Sci-Hub to get the full studies to read. If you are just starting out, pick small topics to get an idea of how studies are formatted. Say you start with the dopamine receptor. Use Wikipedia to learn a high level view of things.

Then when you find something interesting you want to learn more about, use Google Scholar. Let's say you found the D2 receptor's effect on cAMP interesting. Search for that.

Let's say you pick one of them.
https://www.pnas.org/content/88/8/3135.short
Then you use the DOI (10.1073/pnas.88.8.3135) to search in Sci-Hub.
You get the full study.
