You may know that in the slightly different world of icp-ms, thanks to the reaction (collision) cell, work that not so long ago required a $500k machine is now done on $75k machines.
In other words, watch out for those technological advances - send your lab folks to appropriate scientific conferences (e.g. Pittcon, AOAC, ACS) as budget allows. Since AOAC methods development was mentioned, you probably are doing this already....

Yep, we attend most of the conferences. We also have people working for us that used to work for Agilent, Thermo, and Waters, along with direct contacts at those companies that are always keeping us updated. The triple quad we want is a Waters one. It's the best of the best, but very expensive!
The issue with ICP-MS is the acidic solvents used, and how it adversely affects the machines around it, so you almost need a dedicated room for it to live. Not to mention the heavy metal reference standards you need to regularly handle. Plus, we have a lab partner down the street that does all our ICP-MS for us very cheaply. We just drive our samples there and it is super convenient. Hard to justify bringing that in-house when we have them down the street. Triple quad LC-MS is a different story.
