What makes the power from the grid 'dirty?'

So "dirty" power is a term for a combination of things: sags, swells, interruptions, voltage transients/surges, waveform harmonic distortions, imbalance, and frequency variations. Alternating current power is a lot more complex than most people realize. Some cities and buildings have cleaner power than others. Most of these "dirty" power issues are not a problem for normal appliances. It might wear them down a bit faster, but waveform harmonic distortions are not really going to matter to a refrigerator or oven. However, very precise pieces of equipment like a UPLC-MS can have their operations negatively affected by these things. This could lead to a noisy mass spec result. It could lead to your detection limits not being as precise. It could lead to excess wear on the parts of the mass spec detector. When you are talking multi-hundred thousand dollar machines measuring things in the parts per billion range, these power anomalies can be a big problem. This is what the IQ/OQ testing is for as well. This qualifies your machine in your specific lab for operational parameters, repeatability, detection limits, and measurement uncertainty. If you have dirty power, you might have more measurement uncertainty you have to deal with, higher detection limits, less repeatable results, and poorer machine performance. This all factors into your method validation. To ensure the most accurate and precise results, you can't have the quality of the power going to the machine be a factor.
