What happens if BAC water goes bad?

I've been reading that after the rubber stopper has been punctured that BAC water needs to be refrigerated. And even after that it will expire. What are the consequences of this? Is sterility the only feature that is lost? Or could the peptides be damaged?

Not to be a doubter, but how exactly are microbes supposed to 'grow' without a carbon source?

They won't really, unless you contaminate the bottle. That's what happens when you poke the needle through the rubber top. The benzyl alcohol in the BAC water helps prevent any bacteria that get introduced through the piercing of the top. It's not going to grow anything just by itself, though. You would need to contaminate it. Just sitting there in your fridge it will be good for quite a long time.
