What happens if BAC water goes bad?

I've been reading that after the rubber stopper has been punctured that BAC water needs to be refrigerated. And even after that it will expire. What are the consequences of this? Is sterility the only feature that is lost? Or could the peptides be damaged?

It doesn't really expire. It just becomes less effective at preventing microbial growth.
