Deltorphins - Delta-opioid peptides extracted from frog skin.

Stumbled across these naturally occurring delta opioid peptides, and there's not much information out there besides lots of vendors charging extremely high prices and a few scientific articles that aren't very detailed.

One of the most interesting notes is that deltorphins have been found after testing to have the highest affinity for delta opioid receptors than any other natural compounds. They also target mu opioid receptors. Surprising as well that they are extracted from the skin of South American frogs belonging to the genus Phyllomedusa, rather than a plant of some sort. I've found mention of two types: deltorphin I, and deltorphin II.

On that note, the same frogs' skin has another compound: dermorphin. This one seems to be geared more towards the mu receptors than the delta, but still affects both. There's actually a little bit more information this compound, with the New York Times actually making mention that it's been used as a performance-enhancing drug for racehorses.

Did you feel any therapeutic effects after vomiting other than a general sense of "cleansing"?

After more research, it seems that these natural peptides are broken down very quickly, so other than large oral dosing or IV administration they might not produce much of an effect; however this is only on information gleamed from dermorphin, while there's almost nothing out there on deltorphin.

It does seem that the structure of both dermorphin and deltorphin is such that it allows for easy manipulation and synthesis of various analogs that keep the desired effects on the delta and mu opioid system. There seems to be ample room here for experimentation, maybe in combination with another amino acid or peptide to increase the longevity of its effects, or maybe synergize with the effects of another.

Although I'm a long-time nootropics researcher, I've only recently begun studying peptides and their possibilities. This is a whole new world.

Hey /u/misteryouaresodumb -- you seem to be the resident expert on nootropic peptides; have you seen these before or see any beneficial characteristics for cognitive, anxiolytic, or therapeutic purposes? Was thinking combining deltorphin with semax to supplement an additional effects similar to tianeptine synergized with semax, maybe by creating a nasal-spray stack of sorts. Would love to hear your opinion, sir. Thanks!

Are we really talking about smearing frog poison on our skin?

The peptides linked above all look like agonists of various opioid receptors. It looks like they hit delta and mu mostly. That would explain how it induces vomiting in the weird Indian ritual. Quick ingestion of strong delta and mu agonists is a sure way to vomit.

They might have some therapeutic benefit. Ain't no way I am making a nasal spray of them. A peptide-based opioid agonist would surely raise some red flags with people I don't want to deal with. Not to mention it would be extremely dangerous, as some of those are extremely potent, and could cause respiratory depression. Finding the right dosage would be key. Not to say I am not curious, though.
