Anyone have an ELI5 on this study on hand? Heh.

Resveratrol improved memory in mice, when injected in the brain. The effects were lost on mice that did not have the Sirtuin 1 gene. SIRT1 is an enzyme that deacetylates proteins. Other studies have shown that resveratrol does not bind directly to the SIRT1 enzyme, but does lead to its up-regulation. This leads to enhanced binding of Lamin A to the SIRT1 enzyme. Reduced insulin resistance has been linked to SIRT1 down-regulation.

First off, Saint John's Wort, or it's active ingredient hyperforin, does not rely on it's MAOI activity to alleviate depression. It increases extracellular sodium levels, which signals the 5-HT receptors to up-regulate.
