I need help quitting methylphenidate

Original post in this thread

Hi.
Some background: I was prescribed 60 mg/day XR Methylphenidate about 6 months ago. I took it as prescribed for about a week then started plugging my 2 30 mg doses every day. Literally every day for 6 months. In the last 5 days, I have used an entire 2 weeks worth of my prescription, so 840 mg. I have lost about 35 lbs since the start and I was always a pretty skinny guy to begin with.

Anyway, I have been wanting to quit for 2 months now but have never tried. I keep telling myself that I should quit or at least only take them as prescribed. But I have never acted on this. If I go more than 8-10 hours without a dose, I will be very psysically uncomfortable: terribly restless legs and feeling an entire body sensation thats very hard to describe.

Moving on, tomorrow is the day I plan to quit cold turkey. Many of my extended family members have heart conditions, many of which are serious and require OHS. Every day I constantly think I will be one of those kids you read about who died because of heart failure or an OD. I can't do anything mentally demanding without dosing. I know generally what to expect when quitting cold turkey. I haven't found much information online about…

It will allow you to have the same effects, but with a lower dose. Many >people even report enhanced effects with lower doses.

Source for this? From what I see, there are no scientific studies whatsever that support this idea (besides the protection from excitotoxicity). Anecdotal evidence seems to be very mixed; some report it works well, others find it reverses the effects of MPH.

Most of the reports are for amphetamine. I may have jumped the gun on equating methylphenidate tolerance to amphetamine tolerance, as there are really no studies looking into the matter. I know many people that have been able to reduce their amphetamine tolerance using memantine. However, I cannot say for sure that will transfer to methylphenidate with the same efficacy. So I really should say that it may help with tolerance, and will protect from excitotoxicity.
