Piracetam and TRH analogues antagonise inhibition by barbiturates, diazepam, melatonin and galanin of human erythrocyte D-glucose transport

These findings suggest that piracetam and its analogues bind to GABAA receptor after it is activated by barbiturates or benzodiazepines, as found here with piracetam interaction on glucose transport. Despite these findings, there is no evidence of direct binding of piracetam or levetiracetam to GABAA receptor.

Very interesting! Somehow the binding of benzodiazepines to the GABA receptors allows for piracetam to then bind to another allosteric site and antagonize the effects. However, piracetam does not bind to this site in the absence of benzodiazepines. It seems that it's effects on increasing glucose transport in the brain also counteract the effects of melatonin on glucose inhibition. This does fit with it's observed characteristic of preventing aptosis during trauma. It keeps the glucose chain working so that the cells can protect themselves.
