How to battle people's preconceived notions about Drugs?

My father is under the impression that anybody who remotely thinks about experimenting around with drugs after a certain age falls under the "addict/crazy person/mentally fucked up" bracket. I currently have to live with him for reasons that have nothing to do with my use of drugs. I was tripping on some DXM/Cough Syrup (which I do once every 5-6 months) a few days back and with my luck, my dad was still awake when I got back.
I do have a bit of a history with drugs. I've gotten in trouble for weed in my teenage years and have a DUI on my record from 6 years ago which I learned from and I have never driven drunk since then. Either way, my dad is not new to the idea of me experimenting, but he flipped the fuck out and I tried to explain to him in a very calm tone that the last time I did DXM was 6 months ago and that psychedelics are not the same as heroin or coke or meth. It has benefits, etc., etc.
Because he has no idea what I'm talking about, without asking me, he booked me into a fucking rehab. I tried to talk to him again about it, and I asked him "what if I told them I have no burning desire or temptation to get high off anything, including alcohol and that I do this jus…

At least your dad cares enough about you to try and help, even if his response is extreme. You know him more than any of us do, and it sounds like he has his mind set. I'd sit him down and let him know that you appreciate that he cares enough to do that, and that you will humor him. However, you need to discuss with him that your interest is not based in addiction. I would not lie to the rehab staff. That's not going to get you anywhere. If you truly have only taken DXM once every six months, then it will be fairly obvious you are not an addict. Don't go for months for no reason, that's crazy. I'd humor him for a week at most.
