Experimentation with Drugs will effectively end my relationship with my girlfriend of 3 years. I still want to experiment. Advice?

TL;DR: I'm in a solid, 3 year relationship with my best friend, but my desire to experiment with drugs is in direct conflict with her personal beliefs concering them. Do I forgo experimenting in favor of my relationship, or break it off, and hope to see her at the end of the rabbit hole?
I have a relatively mild experience in terms of the drugs I've used. Basically, it boils down to significant weed smoking, MDMA a few times, a pitiful amount of shrooms a few years ago, and an experience trying crack and cocaine I definitely regret.
My girlfriend doesnt understand drugs. She adopts the same mentality that people in western society are taught in public schools. The whole this is your brain, this is your brain on drugs thing. I understand drugs to be something altogether distinct from what I have been taught in school. They are a tool of not only self-discovery, but can also be used as lenses through which to view reality (psych's mostly.)
I consider myself a philosopher. I have chosen it as my major in school, and I am interested in using drugs (psychedelics primarily) to completely change my paradigms relating to how I percieve my world.

I've tried the long intimiate discussion, but my girlfriend has this.. turtle mode when we talk about things that make her anxious. She mentally and physically locks up. She will go absolutely silent, and I have to coax her out of it. Can take upwards of an hour.

My girlfriend does this same thing at times. It has taken much patience and strategy on my part to get past it. I am not totally past it, but we've made tons of progress. She is the sweetest person on the planet, but mentally locks up sometimes. I can see why, with how her mother is. It's a barrier that she has, and it's not her conscious choice. That does not make in any easier though. Sometimes it takes hours, or stopping completely and coming back to it another day. Only you can decide if it's worth it or not.
