Addiction is a mental problem, not a direct cause of the substance itself.
Addiction is a brain disease, cause by a substance. A substance alters the chemistry and structure of the brain, causing addiction. In this sense, the substance causes addiction.

That is incorrect. How would you explain gambling addictions, then? What about addictions to things like eating clay pots or excessive cleaning. Addiction is a mental problem. Each individual will have that manifest in different ways. Some people turn to drugs. Others turn to gambling or skydiving. The substances and actions themselves are not the cause of the addiction, they are the symptom. The more people misunderstand the nature of addiction, the longer addicts will have a hard time getting the help they need.
