My gf got stuck with the closing shift and then BOOM, the karma police showed up.

The problem I have with tipping, in general, is that it's percentage based. Is the server at Ruth's Chris really that much better than the server at Denny's? Is he 5-7x better?
I don't have a solution to the problem, but I think it is a problem.

I have a solution that is in practice for me for some time now.
$1 per drink
$2 per plate
If you stay longer than an hour, add $2.
Those are my "service fees." If they are really good and they worked hard, add a tip on top at your discretion. A tip for me is just that, A TIP. It's not compulsory. This is why I split my reasoning up into different groups. Service fees are a given, tips are not. Even if it doesn't make a difference in the end, the reasoning does for me.
