Hey guys. So yesterday I took acid for the first time. During the trip I was just totally perplexed with the idea of what tripping is. Fractals everywhere and things were moving. When I first realized I was tripping it was like a whole new world. I noticed I kept having to tell myself "this is a drug, it will wear off in a matter of hours". I also kept checking the time. So basically, I think I had a bad trip. My problem is, today, I'm totally freaked out. I feel like my innocence has been taken away from me or something, and things aren't as "sincere". I keep having almost waves of anxiety or something, followed by rationalizing the fact that I took a new substance yesterday and this is normal. Druggit, is this normal? Please share your experiences with bad trips and how you dealt with them. I really just need to talk to someone about this. Thank you guys much love
Edit: I also feel like I'm not feeling emotions to their full extent. I can accept the fact that this is because of a drug I took, but will I go back to feeling like my happy self within a few days?

Putting that study in simple terms like "it's decreasing [brain activity]" is not accurate. Yes, it suppresses normal operation of the brain, leading one to assume that it is dumbing you down. That's not the case here. What is happening is that the parts of the brain which normally determine what sensory information is important (kept), whats not important (suppressed), and where it goes (perception) are shut down. The user experiences all sorts of sensory phenomena that would normally be disregarded. And, what I imagine causes most of the hallucinations, there is a distinct lack of "normal" perception--a void which the brain attempts to fill with any sort of sensory data. This latter is much like a dream-state.
edit: here's a link to a reddit thread about that very article

Right, that is what I said. There was no implication that it was "dumbing you down."
That's why I said this:
The brain spends a lot of it's energy to try and keep your life consistent. It uses specific parts of your brain to suppress abstract thought, because that leads to instances that could result in harm. It's an evolutionary trait. The more consistent your brain keeps your thoughts, the less likely you are to get into a situation you don't know how to get out of. It's protecting itself. This is why psychedelics can help break through that evolutionary blockage, by stopping those parts of your brain. Pretty cool actually.
