I'm dying for some rational justification of why it's OK for the White House to try to censor something, as ugly as it is.

The White House has to at least ask for it to be taken down, so they look like they are condemning it. They are not going to force it to be taken down, but they have to at least ask. It's the responsible thing to do, even if they know Google will say no.
