Hey guys, long time reader. What are the hype supplements of 2024 going to be?

Catuaba is not one plant; it usually is made with catuama (trichilia catigua) and muira puama (erythroxylum vaccinifolium) which together makes the dopaminergic aphrodisiac mix you're talking about!

Anecdotally, I've tried a couple of preparations of catuaba and all they did is make me wired and overstimulated 馃様

You actually have that flipped. Catuaba is a single plant formulation most of the time. The issue is that different regions use different species, and the tracking and quality control in those regions is not good. This means that sometimes you get Trichilia catigua, while other times you get Anemopaegma mirandum. It's all wild crafted by small time people that literally just walk out into the jungle and harvest plants they think are correct. Then what happens is the middle men buyers batch them all together from different harvesters, and sometimes some of those batches are different species without people knowing it. It's not that they are mixing in other plants on purpose to create a planned combo. It's that they are just not holding the source tracking and quality control to the standards other plants are. There are other plants in Brazil that labeled as "Catuabas." However, these are more mislabels than anything. We have been working for a few years to elucidate all the species, and create botanical reference materials. We have a few professors at universities in Brazil working with us, and even bought one of them a new column for their HPLC, so they could do some analysis there. We are also working with an ethnobotanist and herbalist to properly release some products made from them, but the science is slow moving, because of all the disjointed information in Brazil.

Catuama is actually a mixture of plants. It's usually Trichilia catigua, Paullinia cupana, Zingiber officinalis, and Ptychopetalum olacoides. Muira Puama is actually Ptychopetalum olacoides, not Erythroxylum vaccinifolium. We have raw bark, wood, and other plant part samples from a bunch of these plants here at our facility for research. There is a lot of false data on plants from Brazil. It makes things very difficult, which is what we are hoping to fix with our partnerships.

Here is an HP-TLC plate with multiple of the species on it.
