ND Kava - Does it do anything?
Original post in this thread

I've been taking it for a while (multiple months), but not sure if it's doing anything at all. Any other experiences out there?

Our kava tablets are not very "heady." It's more heavy, so it is great for inflammation and pain. However, many people are looking for the cerebral and heady effects from kava. That will require a different strain. I use our kava tablets primarily as an easy way to get some mild heavy effects, or to add those heavy effects to a traditional kava experience. That's actually nice. If I make a very heady kava traditionally, I will take one of our tablets to add in some of the other effects that are missing. Sometimes certain kava strains can be too heady, and actually make stress worse. Adding in a tablet of ours will help balance that experience out.
I actually wasn't really into kava prior to recently. It was more /u/Pretty-Chill that was. However, my team and I have gotten a lot more into kava the past year. We have been getting all sorts of cultivars from all over the world to test. I have also been making fresh kava traditionally. I have it frozen fresh on a farm in Hawaii, and then air shipped to me. It's a totally different experience fresh. It tastes like watermelon cucumber water. Soooooo much better fresh. However, most of the Hawaiian cultivars are heady. You don't really get heavy strains there, so adding in one of our tablets to a session really helps. Fresh kava is just not practical for most people, though. It's super expensive, and doesn't last very long. You get a lot more bang for your buck with a quality dried powdered kava. We are in the process of determining which cultivars we are going to release, but we will have more kava options soon. These will be bags of powder for people to make traditionally. We have a few more rare cultivars that stand out, which I think we are going to go with. Then I think we will also make our own blend of cultivars, to get our own unique balance of effects. So I think we will be releasing 3-4 more kava options in the near future. We are also working with one of the largest kava companies in the community on this project. They know growing kava, and even have their own farms in Hawaii. We know the science and lab testing piece, so we are working together with them to advance the science of kava.
I will say that our testing has turned up some concerning results with most of the traditional kava out there. Many of them are high in heavy metals and microbes. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise, seeing how most kava is grown on small farms in places like Fiji and Vanuatu, then processed locally on some sketchy looking machinery on the islands. This is what is taking us so long on bringing out our traditional kava options. Our kava tablets are expensive, but the amount of quality control and testing it goes through is light years ahead of the rest of the kava market. That's why the cost is so high. We are trying to help our new kava partner bridge the gap on the quality control and testing side of things, but that takes time. We'll get there, though. Kava is a really cool plant, and it just needs a few players in the industry to bring the standards up to par.
