Emiel and Erika are having to move to the Netherlands on short notice. It turns out that the US immigration system is super fucked up, and unfortunately /u/Pretty-Chill has to leave the country for a while.

Yep, it's really shitty! It took us a long time to get him into the country, and we actually had Kyrsten Sinema help us; who was our US representative at the time, now our senator. Then when it was time to renew his H1B, Trump had gutted the number of allowed visas, so they tried to kick him out then. We had to get Greg Stanton involved to stop that, who is our current US representative. We also had to send in an over 3,000 page binder to the US government with documentation for why he needed to be allowed to stay. Luckily we were persuasive and got his visa renewed. Unfortunately, 6 years is the maximum allowed for an H1B. However, we had hope that everything would be fine because him and Erika actually got married! So she sponsored him for a green card. Well I guess Trump gutted that whole system, too. This means it is taking over a year just to get the first interview where they even assess if the marriage is real. Then it will take another year after that to get to the next stage, with no guarantee they will approve it. If he stays, he is risking being deported for any minor offense, and then his chances of a green card go away. To say we are upset is an understatement...
Everyone complains about illegal immigration, but then the system makes it impossible to do anything legally! He's been here for 6 years, sponsored by a US company for 6 years, paying US taxes for 6 years, building a life here for 6 years, is now married to an American, and is a huge asset to the US! However, even then the system makes it next to impossible. It's a huge shame. We are still trying to pull some strings to hopefully speed things along, but there just is not enough time. Him and Erika are trying to make the best of it, and will continue working remotely from the Netherlands, but it is disappointing to say the least.
