Tribulus nephrotoxicity

Original post in this thread

How concerned should we be?

I'm seeing some studies, but am having trouble deciphering how serious this is.

Any thoughts? Any dosage thresholds?

Thank you.

Note - I know Tribulus is not an ND product, but based on what I see, it will be within a year. I'd also rather post this question in this subreddit than anywhere else.

Tribulus terrestis-induced nephrotoxicity?

Betteridge's law of headlines says the answer is no! LOL

The observation of hepatic and renal adverse events cannot be attributed to Tribulus simply because of the existence of phenomena such as geeldikkop or staggers. There is insufficient evidence to presume that T. terrestris was responsible for the effect—especially considering the unknown quality of a product simply described as Tribulus water.

Yep, Betteridge's law is intact! Let's look at the study.

Tribulus terrestris-induced severe nephrotoxicity in a young healthy male

Fucking Iran, man... It seems like every study I read out of Iran is garbage!

Information regarding the type of preparation, the extraction solvent and the drug-extract ratio is lacking and even the presence of T. terrestris was not phytochemically confirmed. Nor was a microbiological analysis of the preparation undertaken.

Same shit as that other Iranian study everyone uses as evidence of gotu kola's toxicity. Maybe we just ignore things from Iran from now on? The Indian study is a rat diabetes model using streptozotocin to induce type 1 diabetes by damaging the pancreas. Hyperglycemia-induced renal injury happens from diabetes, so that seems to be a confounding variable here. They didn't give healthy rats tribulus. They artificially induced diabetes with streptozotocin, then gave those rats tribulus, and found kidney damage. Is that relevant to healthy humans? Hard to say.
