I mean, I'd try it out in a heartbeat, but it was done as a single blind study with the reasoning that they couldn't make an indistinguishable placebo due to the smell lol. Is that actually something that can't be overcome or just an excuse?

You could make coated tablets that would eliminate the smell, but probably not on a small scale for a research study.
