Jesus, that's fucked of them. I hope they tried to make good by at least covering shipping. Dealing with vendors is the worst, especially when they're not transparent... As a business owner and perfectionist, how do you delegate things to others? Back when I had a business I really struggled with struggling. I needed to learn how to reach out for others help, and actually accept it. I continued to think that I could do everything myself because I was a perfectionist. In the end it went from a decently successful business idea to being a failure because I didn't understand how to grow it.

So delegating was a challenge for me early on. I started this all from nothing out of my house, so I was used to literally doing everything. That's how I have been my whole life. I knew that if I wanted it done to my standards I had to do it myself. That's fine at the start. I can juggle more things than most. However, that's obviously not a winning strategy to grow a business. It's actually where a lot of businesses fail. Being able to do something well yourself doesn't necessarily mean you can build an operation where other people can do it well, too. They are totally different skills. It takes a lot of growth as a business owner to help lead your company through the various growth stages. You have to fill different hats at each stage. If I randomly showed up today to the lab and tried to take over and do things myself, I would just fuck it up and cause problems. The same goes for every part of the business. I have created the business structure that has allowed for these departments, processes, and procedures to form. However, I am not personally involved in every single little thing now. It's grown beyond me.

So there are multiple parts to successfully scaling a business that you started yourself. You need to recognize what specifically made you successful at a given task. A lot of times we just do things to get them done, but we don't consciously step back and analyze why we did it and why it worked. To start delegating, you need to step back and look analytically at things. You are going to need to turn these tasks over to other people. How can you do that if you don't understand what made you succeed at those tasks to begin with? You have to really analyze what works and doesn't, then start thinking about how best to delegate each one. The next step is to analyze how to divide the tasks. You will have to take a holistic view of what you did, then decide on how best to efficiently chop that up so a group of other people can do it. Once you decide on a basic structure, then you have to find the people to fill the individual roles. That's the hardest part. Finding the right people will make or break you. It will also take a lot of time, and you will move people around till you find the place where they can really shine. However, once you have the right people in the right roles, you can focus on optimizing the business structure and operations.

So it is for sure difficult to let go of things and delegate. Finding the right people to work for you is key. That makes it easier to let go, because you at least know you trust the person taking it over. Then once you have done that, it's about constantly evolving your role in the company to further support and advance the rest of the structure you built. You build the corporate structure, then give each manager within it the tools they need to keep the wheels moving forward.
