Just started taking Alcar in the morning, when having previously only ever done it in the afternoon/early evening!!

Hi everyone.

I can't believe I hadn't noticed I'd been misplacing/managing my stack for a long time... so the revelation that I should have been loading up more early on with ALCAR early as opposed to late has seemingly passed me by. I had often wondered why I felt that little bit more productive/determined in the late afternoon and evening. Now I'm an owl by nature anyway, and yes I know it's been advised not to do it too late to avoid insomnia but I guess it didn't dawn on me... but for year since I've started doing ALCAR, I tended to take it around lunchtime or even just before dinnertime (dose of usually 500mg).

The other thing I've noticed is that when fasting Alacar can really reduces the brain fog. I had attempted to fast and even with choline and L'tyrosine and a bit of MCT oil had ridiculous brain fog which made me unproductive. Alcar seems to have helped reduce it significantly.

/u/MisterYouAreSoDumb might be able to explain it. I don't have any links I can refer you to off hand.

The whole concept doesn't even make sense... So something is fat soluble. Why would it need to be taken with fat to absorb? What mechanism are we even looking at there? Do water soluble things need to be taken with water to absorb, or is there already water in your body? The whole concept is backasswards. The mucous membranes in your GI tract ARE THE FAT. You need fat in your diet to maintain the fatty acid concentrations/balance in your intestinal mucosa, but that doesn't need to happen at the exact same time you are consuming supplements. If you have enough fat in your diet to balance things, it doesn't matter when you are getting it. Everyone thinks you need fat to bind to fat-soluble things, so they can be whisked away into your body. However, that's not true. Just look at aniracetam. That's fat soluble, and gets rapidly and immediately absorbed in a fasting state. If it needed some fat to be taken with it, how does that happen?

Aniracetam is very rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6474613/

In humans, rats, and dogs, aniracetam is rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration and is extensively metabolised in the liver, primarily to N-anisoyl-GABA.

There are some exceptions, like vitamin D.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25441954

However, it is much more complex than people realize.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5643801/

So you can't generalize things like everyone does. Just because something is fat soluble does NOT mean you need to take it with fat to absorb it. You have to look at each compound individually. I take everything I use in a fasted state, since that's my normal state now. I do 22/2 intermittent fasting. So 22 hours out of every day I am in a fasted state. Everything still absorbs fine, since I get enough fat in the 2 hour window that I do eat. I also account for absorption in the types of supplements I take. So things like Longvida or our new Micromag/Microzinc, which encase the active ingredients in a lipid bilayer to improve absorption. THAT type of lipid improvement does make a difference, as you are encasing single particles of the active in a lipid bilayer that is designed to improve absorption. If I just took magnesium oxide and mixed it in olive oil, that would not be leading to the improvements needed.

In ALCAR's case, the poor bioavailablility is mostly due to P-glycoprotein. So taking something like piperine would help a lot, just like it does with regular curcumin.
