Based Supplements makes a good one. High quality + 3rd party tested

Actually, no. They only send to Eurofins for heavy metals and mycotoxin analysis. They don't do any identity testing to prove it is Butea superba, nor assay testing for the bioactives. This is the main issue, and why we have never released a Butea superba product. Every single material we have been sent is not real. Nobody is doing proper ID testing or assaying. Suppliers know this, so they send everyone Butea monosperma. This is a totally different species than superba, and makes VERY different compounds. The central mechanism of Butea superba for male health is cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibition. On the other hand, Butea monosperma's signature bioactives, especially butin and butrin, have well-documented antifertility and male contraceptive activity. This means if you are taking Butea monosperma instead of Butea superba, you are actually causing fertility issues for yourself.

In fact, we tested this at DNA labs. We went to the Thai supplier Based uses, and tried to just source what they were. They sent us their extract and we sent it to the DNA lab. The rbcL and psbA-trnH chloroplast markers hit Butea monosperma at 100% sequence identity. This is as definitive as plant DNA barcoding gets. The ITS2 nuclear marker scored 96.24% identity to Butea monosperma vs. only 85.05% to a Butea superba reference, with the Butea superba match also showing only 90% query coverage, suggesting significant sequence divergence. The 100% chloroplast identity to Butea monosperma is not a "nearest neighbor" call like in some instances we see. It is an exact match to a complete plastid genome reference. The sample is Butea monosperma. We pushed back on the supplier, and they sent us their whole dried root raw material before extration, and we sent that to the DNA lab. Again, 100% match to Butea monosperma. The supplier Based is using is selling monosperma, not superba. Based does no DNA or ID testing of any kind, nor bioactive assaying for the unique compounds in Butea superba, so they wouldn't know that they are selling the incorrect species.
