The Electrolyte Delusion: New White Paper by Paul Eftang

Original post in this thread

Most electrolyte supplements on the market are just copying the WHO's oral rehydration salts (ORS) formula, which is a formulation designed for dire situations requiring quick, life-saving hydration at rock-bottom cost. But is that really optimized for athletic performance, daily hydration, or those of us living in desert climates?

Our CEO Paul (u/MYASD) just published a deep-dive white paper breaking down why the industry's electrolyte approach might be missing the mark: "The Electrolyte Delusion: Intelligent Hydration Beyond the WHO's ORS Formula"

🔗 Read the full paper here: https://nootropicsdepot.com/articles/the-electrolyte-delusion-intelligent-hydration-beyond-the-whos-ors-formula/

The paper explores how current electrolyte formulations fall short and what truly optimized hydration should look like, which is what led to the development of InfiniLyte with all seven essential electrolytes PLUS trace minerals like zinc, copper, manganese…

Thanks for your response. In your next version, perhaps you could consider removing the chlorophyll as well to help with the flavor.

That's in there to deliver the copper. We could switch out to another form of copper, but I don't really want to do that, because it is a fantastic form of it. For one, the copper is a highly-bioavailable form, which keeps the copper:zinc ratio balanced, and improving iron metabolism. Chlorophyllin neutralizes reactive oxygen species, inhibits lipid peroxidation, and has demonstrated radioprotective effects in cell and animal models. The copper center in the molecule is structurally analogous to the iron center in heme. It's a functional part of the antioxidant activity, not just a carrier. For athletes generating oxidative stress during training, this is something no other electrolyte has. Then there is a super interesting, and frankly underappreciated, benefit: aflatoxin blocking. A Johns Hopkins/Linus Pauling Institute clinical trial found that chlorophyllin taken three times daily reduced urinary aflatoxin-DNA adducts (a direct marker of liver cancer risk from aflatoxin exposure) by 55% compared to placebo. The mechanism is physical: chlorophyllin forms molecular complexes with aflatoxin B1 in the gut, blocking its absorption before it can be metabolized into a carcinogen. Aflatoxin is ubiquitous in grains, nuts, and processed foods. This is a real world daily exposure for most people, not an exotic concern. Then there is the gut inflammation benefit. A 2019 study specifically on sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC) showed it inhibited IL-6 and TNF-α secretion and protected against stomach ulcers in mice. A 2022 study found oral chlorophyllin reduced intestinal inflammation in a colitis model. This helps keep the gut balanced, which is very helpful during exercise.

This is the thing, we formulate for effects first and foremost. Taste is a secondary concern, because we are making functional nutraceuticals. Our goal is to make the most scientifically focused formulations for specific effects. If we can also make it taste great, then awesome! However, we will never bend on function for taste. There are plenty of other supplement brands selling flavored salt water if people want to go that direction. We focus on real world improvements to people's lives. Hell, our HR manager is 65 years old, and he plays competitive softball with other friends his age. They would constantly get cramps and have trouble staying hydrated when playing games. He would drink pickle juice with his water to help. However, since we brought out InfiniLyte, they have all switched to it. It has eliminated the cramps they get, and they perform better when using it. They all swear by it. Functionality is our focus, and I would hate to mess up something that really works.
