What is the difference between GABA and PharmaGABA?

Original post in this thread

I was looking to experiment with supplementing GABA but I am unsure if I should buy regular GABA or PharmaGABA. I have read that GABA is typically chemically synthesized whereas PharmaGABA is fermented from lactobacillus bacteria making it more bioavailable than regular GABA. But I have also read that some people still get benefits from regular GABA despite it reportedly not being able to cross the blood brain barrier. I wanted to get the perspectives of people with more experience in this area.

What they were answering

AI Search :

PharmaGABA is a naturally fermented form of GABA with proven safety and higher bioavailability and efficacy for promoting relaxation and focus, while traditional GABA supplements are often synthetic and have low absorption, leading to reduced benefits. PharmaGABA is supported by clinical studies showing it increases alpha brain waves and reduces stress markers, unlike synthetic GABA, which has not demonstrated similar relaxation effects.

Those are all marketing statements from the makers of PharmaGABA. You have to limit your AI searches to scientific studies, not web searches, or it just takes company's marketing statements as fact. GABA is GABA. It doesn't matter how you make it.

High Bioavailability: It is specifically formulated for superior absorption in the body, making it more effective than synthetic GABA.

Horeshit! There is zero valid scientific evidence that GABA made from fermentation absorbs better. That's ridiculous. What's the mechanism or chemistry behind that claim? The one "study" they use as evidence of that was funded by PharmaGABA, was only on 13 people, had literally ZERO information on the supposed "synthetic" GABA they compared it to, and was not published in a real scientific journal where it would be peer-reviewed by objective scientists. It's a marketing document masquerading as a real study. Here, I will link it for everyone.

Bioclinical Naturals is literally who makes PharmaGABA. They are not a scientific journal. They are not a research insinuation. They made that marketing document appear like a science paper, but it is not. It's there to trick consumers.

Chemical Synthesis: "Regular" GABA in supplements is often synthetic, produced from various toxic chemicals that are restricted for use in foods in many countries.

Horseshit again! They want people to think this is still 1980, where suppliers use a GABA synthesis method that uses a multi-stage process that involves intermediates like γ-chlorobutyronitrile. Oooooo, scary chemical name! That fucking synthesis hasn't been used in decades! It's like me saying that some cough syrup makers put heroin and cocaine in them! Yeah, that's right... between 1898 and 1913! Acting like that is an issue now is just bullshit, just like PharmaGABA's claim that γ-chlorobutyronitrile in GABA synthesis is an issue in 2025. It's all lies meant to trick consumers so they can profit off of them. Then they say that α-pyrrolidinone is a toxic chemical used in this process. That's also a lie. α-pyrrolidinone is a degradation product of GABA itself... yes, even their PharmaGABA! It has nothing to do with synthesis, and everything to do with a breakdown product of GABA itself. This is why literally everyone that supplies GABA tests to ensure there is none present.

Now we come to the real kicker... EVERYONE TODAY SELLS FERMENTED GABA! All GABA on the market uses a fermentation process now. Our GABA is literally fermented! That's the fucking industry standard! Our GABA is made using L-glutamic acid made from Corynebacterium glutamicum fermentation. Then the glutamic acid is decarboxylated to GABA by the bacterial glutamate decarboxylase enzyme. PharmaGABA does the same shit, but using Lactobacillus hilgardii fermentation (bacteria isolated from kimchi), It's just a different bacteria used, but both processes are using bacterial fermentation.
