How should I review a product from ND

Original post in this thread

What criteria do I use to rate a supplement?

If I experience adverse side effects does that mean I should rate a product 1-star?

Or if I get excellent benefits does that mean 5-stars?

I've seen some people give 1-star for delivery issues, and others give 5-stars despite not noticing any difference.

I'm only asking because I want to give an accurate review for my fellow shopper.

What they were answering

Unfortunately, there is no real way to force reviews to be an accurate reflection of things. Almost every other brand out there either fakes reviews, or incentivizes them with free product or discounts. It massively skews the public's perception of products and what they think organically happens. I am not kidding when I say that 1 in 1,000 people organically review. Reviews just don't happen organically anymore in any meaningful amount. This leads to you seeing the extremes, unless some sort of incentivization program is put in place. I have never incentivized or paid for reviews, which I felt was the more honest way to go about it. However, then you mostly get the people who have really good or really bad effects talking about it. That, or you get the "nerds" always commenting on effects, rather than a sample of the average person. That's fine, but then you get that sampling bias coming into play. What's the solution? I am not sure.

Regarding your question about how to rate, it really depends. Take beer for example. I use Untappd a lot for trying new beers and rating them. I realize that it is different, as beer is more of a subjective assessment of taste. However, I put beer styles into context. I don't really like brown ales. They are just not my thing. However, I know that going into it. So when I try a brown ale, I shift the rating scale I use to assess how good of a brown ale it is, not how much I personally like it. I think that is most helpful to other people. If I just rated all brown ales 1 star, that doesn't help other people that actually like brown ales. The same goes for food. I understand my own personal tastes and biases, and I try to account for those in my public reviews. If I hate pork chops, and every time I ate them I just said the restaurant was 1 star, that helps nobody. It's my personal bias, not an accurate reflection of the quality of that specific place. I try to put the style of food into context, and then rate based on how well that restaurant did that style of food. I think that is the most useful way to provide information to other consumers that they can make decisions on.

How does that apply to supplements? Well you can put things into context there, too. Take Inifini-C for example. Most people are not going to notice much with it. It's just a good vitamin C. If someone goes in expecting to have immediate strong effects, and gives 1 star when they don't get it, is that helping other consumers to make informed decisions? No, not really. If you buy something that is meant to be stimulating, but you often get anxious with stimulating substances, does giving that product 1 star for doing exactly what it was supposed to help other consumers, or are you just letting your personal bias towards a specific effect cloud the judgement? Even we do that in-house when we are developing new products. We are about to release a tribulus extract, which gives a very strong and acute pushy stimulation/aggression type feeling. Me sitting at a computer all day taking a strong tribulus extract is not really a good use of the supplement, and for my specific daily use it is not good. I don't particularly like that edgy aggressive effect. However, many people do. If you are going to the gym or going on a hike, that aggressive energy has an outlet and is productive. If I just reviewed the tribulus based on my personal bias of taking it and sitting at a desk, then getting too edgy and aggressive, that doesn't help consumers that are looking for that effect in other scenarios. So during my beta testing of it, I took it and went out and shoveled/plowed snow for 3 hours. Then it was great! I had an outlet for the edgy/aggressive effects it gave, and it was nice. So it is all about context, and putting things into perspective for other consumers.
