Are slight variations in flavor/odor normal in some products?

This question is regarding agmatine sulfate, but I have also been wondering about it generally. Let me start off by saying that I don’t doubt the products identity or the accuracy of the assay data in the spec sheet on the product page.

I am aware, from chem classes back in university, of the difference that very very minor impurities can have on things like the appearance of crystalline substances. Can the ≤ 2% of the substance make a noticeable, albeit minor, change in flavor/odor?

I had a tub of agmatine last year, which had pretty much no detectable odor (or not identifiable by untrained me), and had a very slight bitter taste if you got it right on the tongue. I just opened a tub that I received about a month ago, and it smells very slightly like free form L-Citrulline does (which itself has a mild taste), and again very slightly tastes like that+bitter if you get it on the tongue. It kind of makes sense to me that it would have a similar organoleptic profile to L-citrulline, but I had not detected it in the last tub.

For people who skimmed this or, I'm talking about the free form L-citrulline not the malate salt.

Absolutely. The human nose is very adept at picking up smells, with some compounds being able to be detected at the ppb level. We are very good at smelling things. Dogs' noses can go down to the single digit parts per TRILLION range. They are better, but we can still detect very very small amounts of things with our noses.
