Antimicrobial Effects of Oral Hyaluronic Acid

Original post in this thread

One source claims that HA-35 ”(HA of average molecular weight ~35,000 Da (HA-35)” or hyaluron-35 can have antimicrobial effects in the GI tract when taken orally. This apparently also applies to milk-derived HA. Thoughts on this benefits of HA extending beyond skin health? Does milk-derived HA have benefits beyond that from roosters?

Rather confusingly, HA deposits have also been found along the GI tracts of patients studied with various IBDs. Not sure what to make of all this...

”Due to growing bacterial antibiotic resistance, there is an increasing call for a larger arsenal of nontraditional antibacterial strategies. We think HA fits in that category and will function to heighten innate defenses.”

”Additionally, the peak effective dose of milk HA began at ~500 ng/mL, a 700-fold lower concentration compared to that required for HA-35 peak activity. Perhaps milk HA is more potent because it engages at least two HA receptors ”

So it is not talking about direct antimicrobial effects, where the HA attacks microbes. What is is talking about is beefing up the cells in the GI tract, which boosts the innate immune response of the body. In this case, it certainly could help in people with inflammatory issues of the GI tract. So I guess "antimicrobial" has the connotation of it directly killing microbes, which this is not really talking about. I would say that HA is more immuno-supporting by favorably altering the structure of the intestinal epithelium. I will have to do some more research on the milk-derived thing, though. That I am not sure of.
