So this is basically a benzodiazepine, right?

Magnolol and honokiol modulate the benzodiazepine receptor, but they do it very differently than a benzo does. They are very selective to the receptor subtypes they affect. Also, they lead to increases in the number of GABA binding sites and increase their binding affinity. So rather than down-regulation of the GABA sites like a benzo, you get up-regulation and increased binding of endogenous GABA. They also preferentially affect GABA receptors in the hippocampus, rather than the cortex and cerebellum. Benzos are actually REM sleep inhibitors. However, magnolia bark increases both REM and NREM sleep. So while benzos can make you fall asleep, they negatively affect sleep architecture. However, magnolia positively affects it. So while if we remove all complexity and specificity from the equation, it does look like magnolia bark is similar to a benzo, it is actually MUCH different in all the ways we want.
